University Archivist and Director of Special Collections, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA

Job Summary

Reporting to the Dean of Library Services, the University Archivist and Director of Special Collections provides leadership and strategic vision for the collections, services, and programs of the Special Collections & University Archives unit of a premier liberal arts university library. Bucknell’s Special Collections are notable for their close connections to the University community, including a robust program of library instruction, research services, and exhibits. The University Archives supports the administrative and historical needs of the College.

The Director will be supported by a talented and innovative team of librarians, technologists, scholars, and staff working within and across the University. Library & IT has a reputation for excellence, especially in Digital Scholarship, and the Director will be an active leader and collaborator on digital research, preservation, and teaching projects.

Job Duties:

  • Outreach and Education: Manages the department’s outreach activities, including instruction, exhibits, and promotion of services, collections, and programs. Understands the relationship between traditional special collections and current digital initiatives, and coordinates educational efforts, working with faculty, leading instructional sessions, and supporting student research.
  • Leadership and Management: Oversees and directs operations, staff, programs, and collections of Special Collections & University Archives. Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures, ensuring efficient and effective department functions.
  • Collection Development: Sets direction for and leads the acquisition of material through various means (purchase, donation) that contributes to the long-term research value of the collections. Provides direction for projects related to collection management and access, including implementing appropriate systems and developing processing standards.
  • Research and Collaboration: Manages the department’s research assistance program and participates in research collaborations. Integrates outreach with Library and IT activities and programs.
  • Digitization and Strategic Initiatives: Leads and participates in digitization projects. Collaborates with Library and IT staff on key projects and strategic initiatives for the organization.
  • Records Management: Oversees the University’s Records management program, working with Bucknell University offices, departments, programs, and organizations to manage their records in all formats, and to ensure that the University is complying with accepted standards, protocols, and best practices for records management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library or information science, or an equivalent level of education and experience.
  • Five years in a special collections environment, with evidence of increasing responsibility, innovative leadership, and successful personnel supervision.
  • Evidence of broad knowledge of best practices in special collections and archives.
  • Proven track record of engaging students, faculty and the community through special collections outreach, exhibits, research and instruction.
  • Experience with collection management and preservation tools and familiarity with the application of metadata standards
  • Ability to plan and execute well-conceived and relevant exhibits.
  • Strong collaborative and communication skills and a record of commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence.
  • Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with a high priority on the ability to effectively undertake instruction and other public speaking engagements.

Research Data Services Librarian/Specialist, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA

Job Summary

The Research Services department in Bucknell University’s Library and Information Technology division invites applications for a Research Data Services Librarian/Specialist. This role will contribute to the vibrant teaching, learning, and research culture at Bucknell University, which encompasses data-rich courses and undergraduate research experiences in the social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, engineering, and management. As part of the Research Services team, this position will provide instructional and research support for students, faculty, and staff, working closely with data-intensive courses, assignments, and research projects across the disciplines. The successful candidate will also support research data management activities, promote data literacy, and develop policies and procedures for data curation, sharing, and reuse at Bucknell. This position will work closely with our Digital Pedagogy and Scholarship department to help support Library & IT’s robust programs in GIS and digital scholarship across the University. If hired as a librarian, this position may have liaison duties with one or more academic departments, based on experience and institutional needs. While this position works closely with students and usually requires an on-campus presence, the role does allow for flexibility to engage in some remote work, particularly when students are not on campus.

Job Duties:

  • Partners with students, faculty, and academic staff to support data-intensive courses, assignments, research projects, and data literacy initiatives across the university
  • Teaches research skills, methods, and/or software packages relevant to data discovery, collection, analysis, and visualization
  • Offers services and programs to support the research data management lifecycle across disciplines, including consultations with faculty and other campus partners on the development of data management plans for grant applications

Minimum Qualifications

Waidner Spahr Library Fellowship, Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA

Job Summary/Basic Function

The Waidner-Spahr Library Fellowship is an excellent opportunity for a college (4-year or 2-year) graduate to explore the multi-faceted profession of librarianship. The Fellow will support essential library functions by working with two or more teams across the library (e.g. Access Services; Archives & Special Collections; Collections & Resources; Research & Instruction). Specific departments and projects will be assigned based on the fellow’s interest and experience, and the needs of the library. An emphasis will be placed on projects and initiatives supporting the experience of Dickinson’s undergraduate student population, as well as those that advance one or more library values (e.g. DEI; access to information; community of practice; pursuits of inquiry; scholarly communication). This position will also support library promotion and outreach activities including, but not limited to student research awards, pre- and new student orientation, trivia nights, etc. The fellowship appointment is for one year and will be eligible to extend for a second year.

Essential Functions:

  • Supports and engages in essential library services (e.g. research consultations; circulation desk; resource discovery; organization of archival materials), in two or more library teams. Includes becoming familiar with library systems (e.g. Alma ILS circulation functions; SpringShare suite; Dickinson Scholar institutional repository, various library databases) and/or library resources (e.g. subject-specific databases; print and online collections; Archives & Special Collections).
  • Collaboratively develops and implements events, exhibits, programs, or services that directly support the Dickinson student experience with the library. This may include, but is not limited to, leading our pre-orientation program for incoming new students and recruiting students employed for the library’s Information Literacy Badge Program. Supports library promotion and outreach activities including special library events, student research awards, and co-curricular experiences for the Dickinson community.
  • Provides excellent patron-centered services through in-person and online service points. These may be direct such as circulation desk interactions and reference assistance; or indirect such as maintaining the library’s FAQ knowledge base, updating online tutorials, and/or research guides.
  • Engages with issues and trends in profession by participating in webinars, regional meetings, and/or national conferences. Engages with professional literature and communities.
  • Participates in assessment of library services and programs within one or more functional areas assigned. This may include quantitative and/or qualitative data collection and analysis, collaborating with the Quantitative Reasoning Center, assisting in preparing reports for the Dean of Library Services and/or other campus audiences.
